The California Office of Caregiving (Veterans Affairs), is undertaking a pilot study of an online class/support group for family caregivers. The class is for veterans who are either giving or receiving care. To participate, you must reside in California, southern Nevada, or Hawaii, and your care recipient must be suffering from TBI, PTSD, dementia, or doctor-diagnosed memory impairment.
The program, called Building Better Caregivers, comprises a 6-week, interactive online small group workshop of about 15 to 25 family caregivers. Two moderators, at least one of whom is a family caregiver, will facilitate the group. Participants will be involved in the group for about 2 hours a week and will complete an evaluation to measure the workshop’s effectives.
Classes start before May 15.
To apply to participate, please visit the Building Better Caregivers’ website.
HELP. I have been searching for years. The VA does NOT provide any help for spouses. I am in Florida and my husband is 100% P&T VietNam Veteran due to PTSD/. He was even declared “incompetent” by the VA in 2003 and I am his “Fiduciary” in charge of his money. But, VA doctors will NOT talk to me without His “permission”. Hence, he can lie to them about he feels & they have absolutely NO IDEA what he is like at home, because he has just taken a Valium prior to seeing the Dr. This is NOT the man I live with. He is verbally abusive, talks about wanting to die (althought not really suicidal), and has become almost a total “recluse”, AND he is getting worse. He still drinks daily & heavily and I feel I am between a “rock & a hard place”. I can’t leave & yet I have no one to talk to to either.
P.S. Yes, he has been to “group” in the past, but that is no longer helpful or an option. I am the one who needs HELP coping!!!
Hi Gerri,
Thanks for joing our support group for caregiving spouses–I know you’ll enjoy meeting the other members, who understand. Your local Area Agency on Aging also might be a resource for you; the agency will have funding for caregiving programs/services. You can search here: http://www.eldercare.gov/Eldercare.NET/Public/Home.aspx
I’m looking for help from some VA resources I have–I will keep you posted. So glad you found us.
