It’s Friday, so let’s share some funnies. What’s a humorous experience that’s happened to you in your caregiving role? It could be something that happened years ago or just yesterday, as long as today it makes you giggle. We’ll giggle with you.

Years ago I was taking care of an 82 year old woman following her stroke. This patient was a petite, Asian woman who stood about 4′ 6″ tall. Since her stroke she had been very depressed. One day while sitting with Mrs. S, her usual sullen face suddenly drew a huge smile that set her whole self aglow. I asked her what she was thinking about. Mrs. S asked if I could keep a secret. “Sure,” I said. Mrs. S then told me she was thinking back about a secret love affair she had when she was in her early 20′s. The man was her Swedish dance instructor who was a tall, handsome man with long blond hair. She said he looked just like Fabio, the TV actor. We looked at each other and giggled. I was picturing this tiny woman being swept off her feet by a hunky man. She was giggling because she was reliving a happy time in her life.
We usually go to my son’s family home on Thursday nights. Our little five year old granddaughter has often “helped” her Grandpa (my husband) by trying to push her Grandpa’s wheelchair which is far too big for her. She also has often tried to “help” her Dad get her Grandpa out of the easy chair when we are ready to go home. Recently our two year old granddaughter was also trying to “help” her Grandpa in a similiar fashion, as she has seen her sister attempt to do in the past. It is so heartwarming to see their love for their Grandpa. Partly because of his disablity their Grandpa does not interact with them nearly as much as I do, and yet they love him dearly.
What a beautiful story. My 90 year old mom was in atlanta (Ilive in queens new york, mom resides with us) visiting my sister. Mom is a great grandma of a four year old little girl..actually she became a great grandma again on labor day which was another reason she was down there..but little Ella her 4 year old great grandaughter loved helping grandma julie walking and holding her hand. My sister said it was so touching to see this little girl so small and young holding hands with the elderly lady. Their parents are teaching compassion right from the beginning….I love it!!1…thanks so very much for sharing
For my Dad’s birthday we bought him an HDTV since it is one of the few things he still enjoys. My daughter and I set up the tv got it working and he was thrilled. I had also purchased the previous tv which had a built in DVD/VCR, my daughters tv was broken so we took it home since it still worked.
My daughter was watching her “new” tv and said there was a dvd in it and we needed to give it back, (she is 16) I looked at the dvd and burst out laughing, my daughter said it was a bible dvd that her grandmother must have purchased but in actuality it read. “Adam & Eve Raw Edition”. My daughter did not believe her grandfather was watching porn so she put it in the tv and pressed play well sure enough there it was. My daughter started screaming “shut it off” but the remote would not work, nor would any of the buttons on the tv. The dvd was stuck in it!
Well that night we put the tv out for the trashmen I put the tv in the family room in her room and bought myself a new HDTV. We still laugh about it! But of course would never tell my Mom!
My mother had Alzheimer’s. She had never been anything other than an occasional social drinker. However, when we visited her in her apartment at the Assisted Living Center, she would be having a little wine. Then 15 minutes later, she would have another little glass of wine ‘only a little’! She could not remember that she had just had a drink of wine. It must have been masking some of her pain. When we checked into it, we found bottles of wine hidden all over the apartment and periodically had to go on search and find missions to get rid of the bottles of wine that she kept bringing home from the grocery store. At the time, she was on oxygen. The psychologist suggested a little glass of wine at night before bedtime administered by the nurse. It worked!
Meg’s story about the stuck DVD almost made me spill my coffee. That was the funniest thing I’ve heard in a long time. It was especially funny that none of the controls worked on the TV. I would have like to have been a fly on the wall.
