I’ve returned to higher ed after 25 years. I am in my first course, Strategic Human Resources Management, in my grad program at UMass/Boston — Gerontology with Aging Services Management Track. My next big paper I’m starting to write is going to focus on volunteerism in the Salvation Army. They have a lot of elderly services, too.

Hi Gary…congratulations on going back to school. I commend you on that…you are doing something that you want to do during this very chaotic time. Please remember however, you also have to somehow find some downtime. You can not work yourself constantly with no rest at all. Everything you are working to do would be a waste of time should you get sick.
As far as the abuse your Mom gives you…welcome to the caregiving world. Im sure Denise started this so that we could share both the good points as well as the bad points of this important role of ours. I think it is good that you vent. Everyone in here understands completely how you are feeling so dont feel bad for writing the bad things. I think we all in small ways take advantage a little bit to the ones closest to us…for example, if my husband called me during the day and I was busy cleaning or cooking or something I would say I HAVE TO CALL YOU BACK!!!! however if an old friend I havent heard from called while I am doing the same task it would be MY GOODNESS…HOW NICE HEAING FROM YOU!!!!….and shut the flame off the stove and chat…My point is we are always nicer to people furthest away from us and take advantage of those closest. My Mother does the same thing…My role is to keep mom safe, loved, cared for and give her entertainment as often as possible. You are doing all of those things. I also do go for the cup of coffee or afternoons away with my husband and leave Mom homne from time to time. As long as you know you are doing your best you have to remove yourself of the guilt. This marathon of life does not always get applause unfortunately. When you need to hear the clapping come in here…we are all rooting for you and each other…for now know you are doing a great job and from the sounds of things you are a great son..
have a great weekend and try to get some rest.
