Facing Fears

Today on Table Talk, we spoke about your caregiving fears. (You can listen to the show via the player at the end of this post.)

A few suggestions to help manage your fears:

–Your fears can help you pinpoint your need for help, resources, information or just comfort. Consider: What can you learn from your fears?

–Your “No’s” could be a way to mask your fears. Are you saying “No” to all offers of help? What’s the fear behind the “No”? Everyone has limits–it’s important to recognize and respect yours. Creating a mission statement can help.

–We have two motivating emotions in life: Fear and love. Ask yourself: How do you switch from fearing to loving? How can you add loving yourself and your care recipient (even those unlovable care recipients) into the equation? Loving gives you peace; fear just gives you a headache.

–When your fears seem to paralyze, remember your future. Visualizing your future takes you out of today’s fears. And, it helps you create just what you want.

Feel free to share your fears with us here.

  1. I love the simple yet profound wisdom of this article, Denise, and I actually found it very applicable to some fears I’m currently wrestling with that aren’t even related to caregiving. Great piece – it reaches beyond the topic itself and can apply to other areas. Thanks for the encouragement!
