December Challenge: Move It!

(Editor’s Note: We launched this challenge in November and have extended it into December. Move to win!)

It’s hard to do. In your caregiving role, it’s tougher. In the cold months, it can seem impossible.

Which is why our challenge to in December is to move it. Walk, jog, work out to an exercise video–whatever works for you. Commit to moving 30 minutes day, three times a week. Do it for four weeks and you’ll be entered into our drawing for an iPod shuffle and autographed copies of Denise’s books for family caregivers (Take Comfort and The Caregiving Years).

So… stop by here once a week during November and tell us in our Comments Section how you moved. In order to be eligible to win, you must tell us here what you did every week.

We’re given our mind, our body, our heart and today. When you move, you can take care of all four.

Not that I want to brag or anything but it is only the second day of November and this is the first time I sat all day today..( it is 5:05 PM)I think I did enought moving for the week lol….I worked out from 6 AM to 7 AM…I immediately wiped down my entire kitchen,(microwave, appliances, counter, etc.) and then mopped the floor and headed into the bathroom where I cleaned everything in there as well as the floor. Mom woke up and her sheets were soiled so I stripped all the beds..Our washing machine is in the basement so I did a few extra loads so were up and down the stairs about 10 times and stretched to put all the sheets on all the beds….I then vacumed the entire apartment. My neighbors daughter called to say he would be coming home from the hospital today..so I went to his apartment I stripped and made his bed to get it freshened..I cleaned his entire kitchen and floor along with his bathroom and floor and then vacummed his entire apartment lol…I came back up to my apartment and did some ironing…so I think I covered enough for the week lol lol..
Im hoping housework counts…..got to run…I am making porkchops and sourkraut with mom …I left her stirring lol….
    keep laughing..

oh yes and I walked my dog at lunchtime and am headed out again in a few minutes to walk her again…YIPPEE…lots of movement today…if you dont use it you lose it….get moving

7 AM and during the course of my day walked 10,400 steps on my pedometer…(we should walk 10,000 steps per day)….
its not hard to do….i walk around when on the phone, walk around the apartment…take the dog for longer walks…its fun to see the numbers increasing…if you dont have one go get one..so much fun!!!

I know its a hard and busy time but i feel sad that no one responded to the move it challenge. I am sure everyone is just being shy. I cannot believe with how busy we all are that you havent been moving for at least a few minutes each day. I dont think you realize just how much you actually are moving because it is something you do naturally. every time you bend to put something in your oven you moved….every bag of grocries you took out of your car and took into the house not to mention put away, you moved…..come on….tell us!!….take care of yourself just as much as you have been taking care of your loved one.
you dont have to wear fancy gym clothes, sneakers or equipment…

How fun! I missed this before but just spotted it so have to share how I do this. I don’t have a set routine – instead I have two blessings – one is a set of stairs to my bedroom. The other is a set of grandkids who I spend time with several times a week. Between these, I am “forced” to “get moving” even MORE than 3 times a week. :)

When my arthritis permits, I routinely run (and I do mean run) up and down my stairs. When the arthritis says, “NO running today,” I just slooooowly go up and down them. Still and all, I am up and down the stairs several times a day. Definitely a “moving experience.”

With the grandkiddies, we play tag, have races, and/or walk and run around the block. I get to do that at least 2-3 times a week, sometimes more. Today, I ran around the BIG yard with my grand-twins 2-3 times, THEN ran around the yard 2-3 times with my grand-doggies.

It’s a lot of fun, keeps my weight from creeping up too terribly high, for which I’m quite grateful, and is a great de-stresser as well. :)

Good for you!!!!!!!!!!!! So glad to see someone finally joined me and is moving too!! There is no better way than to keep moving than with children. No matter how we are feeling they bring some liveliness back into our lives dont they and the memories you are creating for both them and yourself are priceless. see moving doesnt have to been painful…Bravo to you!!…

:) Thanks Donna. I read a great article when my kids were young that recommended staying in shape by playing with them rather than just watching them. It combines quality time with them along with healthy exercise for the parent / grandparent. The concept was fun, so I’ve stuck with it even into grandparent-hood. :) My body has slowed along with my metabolism, but you’re right, it does make things more lively. I have to admit, though, when the arthritis flares up, I’m a bit slower and do experience those “twinges in the hinges.” On the other hand, if we don’t “keep on keeping on” those twinges would be a lot twingier. Thanks for a great reminder and fun challenge! :) :) :)

ok..well I guess its just kaye and I competing for the prize. I did workout for one hour this morning half weights, half toning/cardio….If you feel you dont have the time to do a real work out start with just stretching…stretch your arms first thing in the morning…thats movement as far as Im concerned and it starts your cirulation going…if you want to do a little more grab a couple of cans of soup and lift those up and down a few times….stretch to get your coffee mug and then pour yourself a hot cup…all these things are movement..your just not aware of it….run outside and wave your arms and say hello to a neighbor…especially this time of year…we should all be wishing our neighbors good cheer…come on…I did my hour this morning…!its so easy…it sounds so much harder than it actually is

ok…well i guess im going to be the winner lol…only kidding…i worked out again for an hour this morning and I have been vacuming pine needles from our tree all day….including the steps and hallway leading to our apartment….I have also been up and down getting odds and end ornaments from the basement and putting them out…this all counts for moving it…are you all doing any type of decorating? baking cookies, anything??? come on…you guys are moving around..your just being shy!!!…….
