What Makes a Caregiving Day “Good”?

Today, on Table Talk, we gave thought to what makes a good caregiving day.

I came up with a list 12 ways a caregiving day can be good; I’m included five of the 12 here. To hear the additional seven, listen to the show via the player at the bottom of the post. (Be sure also to  listen to Wednesday’s Book Club discussion; the author of “A Happy You: Your Ultimate Prescription For Happiness” told us to exercise our happiness muscle.)

A good caregiving day is:

1.When you have the patience that’s needed—patience with your care recipient, your family, yourself.
2.When you wake up and think: I can do this.

3.When the doctor calls you back promptly.
4.When get up the nerve to ask for help—and you get the help you need.
5.When you have clarity of purpose; when something happens that makes you think: Okay, this is why I’m doing this.

As you read and listen to these 12 ways a caregiving day becomes good, you may think: But, they never happen to me! This week, look for them. They are there, waiting just for you.

We’d love to know: What makes a good caregiving day for you?

listening to your blog shows and knowing I have friends doing the same thing as me that I can run to and communicate with makes a good caregiving day for me. I so enjoyed your show today. Your inspiration really put me on the right track on wednesday…and todays show was incredible…

Any day that my patient has more on time than off with his parkinson’s medicine and doesn’t hurt so much is a good caregiving day. This prevents a lot of having to help him get up and down and having to really think hard on getting him the relief he needs throughout the day.

A good day is when Mom thinks of things she wants to accomplish and then does. This can be writing notes, reading a book, doing her laundry. When we play duets on the piano and laugh at our mistakes it’s a good day. I guess it’s anytime I see a glimmer of who she used to be or when she is content.
