Pondering about Priorities

I recently heard someone say: We (human beings) like structure and order. When something does not make sense, we look for and, sometimes create, explanations.

So, during times of stress and uncertainty, when nothing makes sense, I wonder: What is life really about?

Yesterday, I asked a friend: “Is life about sacrifices? Do we sacrifice so ultimately we can get what we want?”

He said: “Absolutely not. Anyone who makes a life out of sacrifices is simply a martyr. And, I don’t believe any Higher Being would want our lives to be about sacrifices.”

I said: “Okay, then is life about compromises? Do we compromise, taking the bad with the good, to get what we want?”

He said: “No, it’s not about that, either. Compromises can be a part of life, but it’s not what life is.”

I pondered this for a night. This morning, I wondered: Is life about priorities?

(My friend also disagreed with this, but his answer—“I’m too impulsive to make priorities”—does not necessarily apply universally. Also, I’ve stopped asking him questions.)

When difficult times come our way, do we survive by re-prioritizing? By making sure our pressing needs top our to-do list? And, is prioritizing a survival instinct? Do we prioritize or perish?

And, what of these tough times? Do we really gain strength? Insight? Enough energy to withstand the next set of tough times?

What do you think: During the difficulties, what is life about?

I don’t think life is about sacrifices, although life sure requires it. I don’t think life is about prioritizing although it is important to prioritize, and difficult times help us to do that. To me life is about living for the glory of God even in difficult times and perhaps especially in difficult times. It is resting in trust even when life seems to be falling apart all around us. It is realizing that one’s life has purpose even when we do not understand the “whys” for the events of our lives. It is realizing that this life is not the end of all things.

Sharon..I always love reading anything you write. You are so incredibly inspirational. My feelings are you change the things you are able to and the things you cannot you deal with the best way possible. I agree that life does require sacrifices but sometimes God needs us to struggle through the journey. I believe in prioritizing. When things get difficult I personally need order in my life so I do the most important things first and if some things cannot get done there is tomorrow….God tests us for sure but he helps us pass them somehow…I truly believe this. Life to me is day by day. I find contentment in knowing I do my best to live my life in a godly way to the best of my ability and most importantly I think life is about finding some sort of humor at least once a day. I try to be mindful of the beauty around me, heat in the cold, food, love, things that we can easily take for granted.
