Mom's problems have gone on for so long now, though, that I think people who haven't met her or seen her in a long time think I must be exaggerating. How I wish I were!!! :) One of Mom's chronic illnesses is c.diff. I guarantee that if I got graphic describing THAT to an "innocent," the hearer would go screaming into the night, haha. I have few enough friends now as it is!! :) Donna, I’ve had that happen, too. One asked (about my mom's current 4 broken bones and her move from assisted living to permanent nursing home resident, along with Mom's comments about the attractiveness of suicide...), "Are things really THAT bad?" Then another observed that my problem is I've lost my ability to laugh over my mom's situation. I have been Mom's caregiver (overseeing, organizing, advocating, taking to all appointments, etc, but usually NOT doing heavy lifting, as she's been in assisted living) for 8+ years. My friends think it's "just me." I am utterly overwhelmed, and I'm sure I'm no fun to be with anymore. Raising 3 kids to adulthood barely got me warmed up for THIS. :) Great myth busting!! It is like you are living with each caregiver because I know we all share common denominators in this world of caregiving. I can agree with all of the myths, including the "mom raised 5 kids one", she did, I am #5!
