A family caregiver shared this tip with me several years ago; it’s so good I never forgot it.
The family caregiver kept a bag packed with toiletries and change of clothes ready to go in case her caree was suddenly hospitalized. This way, she arrived at the hospital with her bag, ready to stay as long as needed. She could, if necessary, easily settle in to her caree’s hospital room to ensure proper care.
Some suggested items to pack in your hospital bag:
–Pair of pajamas
–Change of clothes, including a few pairs of underwear
–Toothbrush, toothpaste and other personal care items you’ll need
–Your medications
–Phone numbers of family members and friends
–A copy of your caree’s Power of Attorney for Health Care and Finances
–Contact information for your caree’s physician(s)
–A list of your caree’s current medications
–A favorite book or magazine
–Notepad and pen so you can take notes when doctors and other health care professionals make visits

This is a great idea, Denise. I remember packing a bag like this when I was pregnant, in order to head out quickly if necessary. It would also be good to keep any supplies that would help your caree stay comfortable and calm. I always take my Ipod so that Mom can listen to soothing music instead of the noises of the hospital. Also, we always take Mom’s walker with us because the hospital has a tough time finding one for someone as tiny as Mom (4 ft 8in).
