Elevator

Life has its ups and downs. Caregiving, though, can seem like an one-way elevator—it just goes down.

Caregiving can be a downer. You see so much suffering. And, so much seems to suffer because of caregiving: Friendships, relationships, career goals, your health, your independence, your confidence.

Is it possible to go up?

You push the “Up” button on your elevator when:

  • You choose forgiveness, especially with yourself.
  • You keep the faith.
  • You embrace humor.
  • You allow mistakes and mis-steps.
  • You express gratitude.
  • You keep kindness in your words and actions.
  • You accept your feelings, in particular, the sadness and grief.

It can seem that we are not in control of our elevator ride. When, really, the controls are within our reach.
