Update on “What Happens When the Caregiver Can’t Function?”

Hi all,

I hope everyone’s Easter was great. We had a quiet Easter at home, with a few of our grown kids stopping by to say “hi”.

Last Tuesday, I was released to take care of Mom again after hurting my back. I’m so thankful for all the help from family members, and good medical care. I don’t think that I’ll have any lasting problems. I am supposed to wear a support belt at all times when transferring Mom, but other than that, I’m back to normal.
We had a wonderful, week-long visit from our son, daughter-in-law, and two beautiful grandchildren. It was fun, chaotic, and amazing. They’ve now left, and our house is way too quiet! We made memories that will last our lifetimes. One of Mom’s caregivers that was scheduled for that time was sick, so we had Mom for three nights during their visit. Instead of me staying at her house, she slept here. Because our bed is so high, our 6’3″ son lifted her into bed each of those nights and kissed her goodnight. After they left, Mom and I cried together because we already missed them so much. I can’t remember the last time I saw Mom cry. It was a good moment together. Those times that I have my “old” mom back are so precious to me!

My husband had surgery on April 1st for his back, and is home from the hospital and doing really well. The nerve pain that he’s lived with for over a year is gone. He is also learning a whole new appreciation for what my mom lives with each day! He has many of the same limitations and restrictions that she does as he is recovering.
My first full day back to caregiving for Mom will be on Wednesday of this week. It will be interesting taking care of two of them!

Thanks for all the support and well wishes during this time. I’m so glad that I’ve found this community.

I am so glad you had some wonderful moments with your son and daughter-in-law and that your Mom was able to be a part of that also. It is good to know that you are doing better too. We are happy you are a part of the caregiving community.
