Meet Our Caregiving Support Group Ambassador

We’re adding volunteers to Caregiving.com to help with our online support groups, as well as with the website, Facebook fan page and Twitter account. Today, I’m pleased to introduce our first volunteer, Karen Gurney. Karen will be our ambassador for our Caregiving Support online support group. As ambassador, she’ll welcome the group’s new members and keep the conversation going.

Here’s a bit about Karen:

“I have been a caregiver for my mother, who is 91, for close to 10 years. She lost her leg 6 years ago. She deals with diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, congestive heart failure, and chronic kidney disease. She has become wheelchair bound within the last year. Until recently, my oldest brother (72) provided caregiving for her during the day, so that I could work. About three weeks ago, he suffered a stroke, which affected his memory, particularly his short term memory. I now have a friend coming in daily during the week to help out. I am in the process of applying to the state for long term care, which I hope will provide in-home health care.

“I work full time as a “technology trainer” for a community college, which means that I teach our faculty  how to use many software applications, assist them with projects involving software, and provide student orientations at the beginning of each semester.

“I have a large extended family, but most of them live elsewhere. I do have a couple of wonderful nieces who live in the area who will help out.”

Welcome, Karen! We’re so happy to have you on board.

Would you like to be one of our volunteers? We’d to have you join the team. Just send me an email with the subject line “Volunteering.”
