Double Moms

I haven’t posted an update on my caregiving situation for a while. On June 21st, we moved my husband’s mother across the country to be closer to us. She is having significant memory issues. We found her a place in a senior mobile home park, and are hoping that she’ll be able to live there independently.

As soon as we finish getting her settled, we’ll get her in for an evaluation of her memory issues and then determine what kind of help, and how much, she is going to need. We really don’t know what is causing the memory issues yet. Getting her in with a good doctor will be our next step, but we’re having a hard time finding one that will accept her Medicare.

I care for my own mom, who is 86-years-old and requires 24-hour care. It’s been a challenge to meet both of their needs. My mother-in-law needs a lot of help right now, and I’m just not free to go help as much as she needs. Also, her memory issues get my mom confused if the two of them are together for extended time periods. It feels like a juggling act at the moment!

Hi–Wow! I wondered how you were managing. :) Have you figured out a “system,” to speak, for your day and your caregiving responsibilities? Does your husband have any siblings near-by who can pitch in? Or, is it just you guys?

I am so sorry for the stress you are feeling. It is so difficult feeling torn in two directions. Feel free to unload on us anytime. We are here for you.

I can only echo Denise. Wow! Taking care of two people is really stressful. It definitely is a juggling act.

It’s got to be especially difficult when your Mom requires 24 hour care. You have a lot to handle right now. I hope that you can get things settled before long.

I am sorry for all the balancing you must be doing right now. How wonderful of you both to bring your husband’s mom closer, amidst all that is going on with your own mom. We’ll be thinking about you during this time.
