One-half of caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia surveyed for a new caregiver study find an equal balance of positive and negative experiences in their caregiving. One-third (33 percent) say their caregiving experience is more positive than negative.
The 2011 report, “Caregivers of Individuals with Alzheimer’s or Dementia,” which was presented at a briefing on Capitol Hill today,...
Today, on Your Caregiving Journey, Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo, our happiness expert, joined us to share her slant on forgiveness. You can listen to our show via the player below.
We spoke about two words which can keep us from moving into forgiveness: “If only…” If only he would…. If only she said… “If only” can be a huge obstacle to acceptance, which leads to forgiveness. When...

I could use some fun.
I hope you can, too.
So, tomorrow, fool me. Play a joke on me. I’m not sure exactly how you can do this but I can tell you that I’m on Twitter, Facebook and you all have my email address. I’m fairly easy to fool as I’m fooled pretty much at some point every April 1.
So, whoever is the first to fool me will win autographed copies of the just-released fourth edition of...

I would love to only write about Robert’s good side and how sweet and polite he is and how he ends every conversation with “God Bless You.” The fact is he gets pretty cranky and stubborn and angry at times.
Wait a minute . . . sounds like me on a bad day. (Shhh! Don’t tell my hubby I admitted that!)
Today I received a call from Day Program telling me Robert had an “accident” and since they didn’t...

Hi all, hope everyone is doing well. I had to do some venting as I am on extreme overload right now and having a hard time with dealing with life at the moment.
I have no clue where I left off here last time but Mom was hospitalized over a week ago. The rehab was concerned because Mom has been having bowel movement issues and due to her surgery last year, they needed to figure out the problem. On top of that...
After an incredibly frustrating two weeks in rehab at the nursing home, Mom is coming home on Friday. I’ve been driving back and forth to the nursing home daily, except for today. Her mobility has declined to the point that the aides are using the Hoyer lift at the nursing home for transfers. On a more positive note, we did a home assessment on Monday. I brought Mom home for a few hours and her physical...

Steve had two appointments today. The first was with his psychologist, and the second was with his primary care physician. Both doctors agreed that they do not think Steve has lewy body. They are not sure what, if anything, he has besides MCI, but they do not think he has lb.
If you are keeping score since we changed neurologists, that’s one for for lb, three against.
The psychologist suggested that after we get...

This morning began as most, with some cleaning up, dressing, pills, breakfast… As I was beginning to help, my mother looked at me and said: “I bet you just love coming in here in the morning.”
I told her it was always a surprise. (:
As I was leaning over helping, I noticed out of the corner of my eye that her walker was moving across the floor. She was not behind it though. Zinnia, one of our...

Today The Style Crone chose to build a composition around a vintage 40′s silk floral scarf and initiated the roll out of the spring jackets by displaying the scarf on this vintage 60′s coral cashmere beauty with silver buttons.
The entertainment began by pulling the mustard out of the scarf and throwing it on my head in the form of a vintage knit hat. The purple flowers were reflected in the vintage leather...

I love business. I also love technology. So, I read a blog called TechCrunch, which talks business, technology and who’s investing in what.
In particular, I love to read about start-ups and how they start up. Many start up with funding from venture capitalists, mostly wealthy individuals who take a risk that a start-up will end up with big pay-off. Recently, much buzz has focused on Color.com, a start-up...

Coffee is ready and I started writing this at 5:45
My day started early
4 AM
Waken by a noise I lay in bed thinking in micro seconds.
What was that?
Hubby is in the bathroom, sounds like he closed his underclothes drawer too fast.
listening,
silence
What was that?
Sounds like the toilet tissue dispenser? going around too fast?
pause
again? I’m going to need to buy more tissue. I hope he doesn’t stop up...
Caregiving can cost a fortune. It can seem to take your money, your patience, your career, your future.
And, as the costs add up, you can’t help but think: This is such an unfortunate situation.
When there’s so much that seems unfortunate, does it also forfeit your fortune?
Your fortune lies in time well spent, relationships worthy of your investment, and common sense that helps keep your perspective....
(Editor’s Note: Recently, Partners Against Pain®, a national pain management education program, contacted me to suggest that its partner, Lee Woodruff, answer your questions about pain. Lee is a NY Times best-selling author and caregiver to her husband, Bob Woodruff, the ABC News anchor critically injured in Iraq in 2006. I put a call out for your questions and then submitted them, plus a few of my own....
We’re working on more posts related to recipes for specific conditions, but it’s late at night and we naturally did a detour to a subject near and dear to our stomach: snacking!
Although we often take snacks lightly, they can have a serious impact on a healthy diet, for better or for worse. According to an article in Everyday Health, “… healthy snacking improves overall health, curbs...

Vintage felt leopard print hat with black ribbon and yellow vintage beads-estate sales, yellow silk Donna Karan jacket and black St. John heels with gold trim-yard sales, and the black ruched jeans that have been a seasonal favorite.
When in doubt, wear leopard!
I am finding that my single focus is spending time at home with Nelson and savoring every moment with intention, although I continue to go to yoga and...

I’d like you to meet Allie. The newest member of the barn that Abrah and I love to go to. She is soooo sweet and loves to be petted. I’ve never known of a new foal to be so friendly.
This morning my mother had additional challenges and clean-ups that I hadn’t anticipated. We survived however, and made it through. Abrah had a riding lesson late morning and I decided to take her. After a hug from...

I know that life doesn’t work this way, but I live close enough to Disneyland that I can live in Fantasyland at times. Right now I want to be there. As caregivers, we’re already dealing with a lot and I just don’t think we should have to deal with those other little trivial things that can throw a monkey wrench into the day.
Tuesday night, on the way home from Boy Scouts, my tire blew out....
This morning, on Your Caregiving Journey, Kathy joined me for Table Talk. You can listen to our show via the player below.
You’ll love listening to Kathy, who shared her perspective on how to stay in a good place in her caregiving role. Her perspective helps her manage those tough moments and days. We spoke about Kathy’s post a few weeks ago, when she wrote: “We have reached the end of our going....

Hi, Robert!
“Hi, Trish. How are you doing?”
Great. How are you?
“I’m doing very well. And you?”
Our conversations always start the same but tonight I couldn’t go in circles with him—I wanted to get to the good stuff: Prom!
Robert, you had Prom today. How was it?
“It was really good.” Yay! He’s added a “very” and a “really” to his normal responses. He must have had a blast.
Did...
I just had the best visit with Mom that I’ve had since March 3rd, when this round of ERs, hospitalizations and rehab started. I went to the nursing home to visit, and Mom had a huge smile on her face when I walked in. She was not confused, and was herself. The physical therapist came while I was there, and asked me to show him how I transfer Mom. I was able to get her up, out of bed, and onto her walker. She...
