Happiness Project: July
Jul 1 2011 in Caregiving Happiness Project, Denise's Blog by Denise
In July, our action word as we begin the second year of our Caregiving Happiness Project is Walk.
I love this one because we can use it for two purposes. Walking is great exercise. It’s also a terrific coping strategy that we often overlook. When I’m overwhelmed, I try to remember to walk because, when I do, I am calm and collected when the walk ends. The movement helps to me move away from distress and replace it with “Oh, I know what to do!”
For me, I’m going to walk:
1. To a new destination twice a week.
2. When I’m feeling overwhelmed.
3. Twice a day three times a week.
I look forward to hearing how you’ll walk in July; please share in our comments section, below.

I would like to use the word “walk” as a coping strategy.
The day before our new word was e-mailed, I was reminded of how Denise talks about a caregiver’s need to just take a little time away…out to our car, into another room, etc.
We were having a particularly challenging afternoon, and after making sure my mother was safe, I walked out into the yard and around for a bit. It was such a help.
Then, we received our word for July! I will continue to use the word “walk”.

I will walk with a friend on the weekend.
I will walk my son up to the park, then continue to walk around and through the park and back home on the weekdays.
I will walk out of the house and into the yard when it gets to be too much.

I will walk 2 times/week.
I will walk with Robert at least 1 time a week. (This might be tough because he prefers to play cards when we’re together but I’m going to try!).

I will walk to get the paper in the mornings instead of driving down (only 1/4 mile each way, but it’s really steep).
I will walk to and from my neighbor’s to visit twice a week (1.5 miles each way). This will get me out of the house and facilitate a visit I enjoy but always feel I don’t have time for.

I will walk around the field by my house three times per week. And my husband and I will do a hike each weekend. And for those times when it gets to be too much, I’ll walk out in the yard and enjoy the garden.

Just found this awesome project and walking is the one thing I do on a regular basis. I start first thing in the morning and walk for about 45 minutes. It is my alone time, prayer closet and great start to the day!
