What Change Will Help You?
Nov 16 2011 in Denise's Blog by Denise
Last night, we aired our live call-in talk show on Your Caregiving Journey. We tackled this question: What change in the health care system would help you the most?
Bette and I shared our thoughts, including a need for better communication between doctors, a need for doctors to be resources to help and support for family caregivers, and a need for customer service in the health care industry. You can listen to our show via the player below.
So, we’d love to know: What change in the health care system would help you the most? Share your thoughts in the comments section, below. And, we’ll two who share will win a Caregiving.com mug filled with a chocolate turkey.
Updates: Our next call-in show airs on November 29 at 7:30 p.m. ET. Call in to share your answer to this question: What’s your best tip for managing holiday stress?

I’m sorry I missed the show yesterday. I had an eye exam and then had to pick out new glasses.
I like what you and Betty came up with and agree with all the suggestions. I would like to see the health care system be more aware of support services and to be more open about giving out that information. It’s shocking to me that our family didn’t know about the Regional Centers until Robert was in his mid-40s (if my parents knew about them, they didn’t take advantage of them). I got Rob approved and a slew of services opened up. Usually people enter the system pre-18 so it was no small feat to get Robert approved. That is just one example of how the doctors could have helped so that we would have known about these services much sooner. Thanks for doing these shows you two! I plan to listen to the program on the way over to Robert’s tonight.

I would like to see the health care system recognize caregivers as true partners in the care of our carees.Caregivers are not valued as professionals, because they are “just” family members doing what they are supposed to do, and very often don’t have the medical knowledge the docs and nurses have. However, they are the first line of care and have the most intimate knowledge of the caree. Jane, Trish and others here have recounted instances of being ignored by health care professionals. In my case, I pled for Mary to be taken off her blood pressure medication, as she suffered for three years with incapacitating symptoms of too-low blood pressure. When Hospice came in and advocated for Mary to be taken off her blood pressure medication, symptoms disappeared.
