Once In A Lifetime

This morning on Table Talk, I told Denise about decorating the float for the Boy Scouts of America’s 100th birthday.  The float was seen in the Rose Parade on January 1, 2010. For us, this was a once in a lifetime experience because we honestly didn’t like it enough to do it twice.  The work is done in a large warehouse, and because the flowers have to be kept as cold as possible, it is not heated.  Later this morning I was talking to someone who told me that they helped decorate a float yesterday and they do it every year. There are plenty of people who enjoy being a part of this, but it just doesn’t happen to be us.

As promised, I’m posting two pictures here so you can see some of the work and our part of the float. In the photo showing part of a word, dried yellow split peas are being individually placed on top of each letter to cover it. The sides are covered with individually placed green split peas. The BSA 2010 photo shows our handiwork. When we arrived to work on the float, part of this sign was started. The three of  us worked for eight hours to complete the sign. There was one on each side of the float, so whichever one we saw on TV or in person, we decided was ours.

Wow! What painstaking work. I don’t think I would have the patience for this or be able to withstand the cold! :-) I enjoyed listening this morning (although I missed part of it). Happy New Year, GJ. Wishing the best for your family in 2012!!

    Hi G-J,
I always love this parade. The flowers amaze me. Thank you for sharing these pictures. How wonderful to have been able to take part in this! Happy New Year G-J, to each of you.

Boy, that takes me back! From 1944 to 1960, we never missed a Rose Parade (until 1955, we lived a block from the Santa Anita Blvd part of the route). But I never met anyone who had actually braved that cold, cold building to put the flowers on the floats. I’m impressed, and you can pat yourself on the back for giving up your comfort for the Boy Scouts!

Ooooh, G-J, I’m not sure I could even do this once. Wow! The work is beautiful and the hands behind the work are those of saints. :)

Thanks so much for joining me on Saturday. Happy New Year!

    Loved the show!
It’s always fun to hear and see (chat room) the “family” laughing together :)

I only participated in 1 parade float nowhere NEAR the size or type of a rose parade and that was plenty for me.
I can’t even imagine the painstaking placing of the flowers and seeds.

But I must confess I admire all the people, like you, that do such a fabulous job every year.
