I’m Kristin, and I am the caregiver for Mary, the mother of friends of mine. She just turned 86, has what we were told was Lewy Body Dementia, but we’re not sure at this point, as some of her LBD-associated symptoms have disappeared.
I am taking care of her because her children do not like her very much, having put up with her abusiveness for years. For that matter, I don’t like her very much,...
I’m looking forward to the Progressive Blog Party this year, especially after days like today.
Mom and Dad seemed to push all of my emotional buttons today during my visit with them. Dad is increasingly tired and now having trouble just sitting up. He speaks when spoken to but when he opens his eyes there is no sense of recognition. When asked who I am, he just stares blankly. He hasn’t spoken...
Hi – My name is Bette and my husband and I and our three children care for my mother at home. In 2002 she suffered a left hemisphere stroke which left her with a right side weakness; requiring a walker.
Four years ago she was diagnosed with vascular dementia. Over the last month her confusion takes up more of her days.
Our most recent struggle is her night-time anxiety. Over the last several days this has...

After my mother’s stroke in 2002, she faced challenges that we worked together to resolve to help her be stronger.
Physical therapy helped her to adjust to using her left arm and leg. She endured a hip and a knee replacement surgery to insert a stent into a renal artery in hopes to help control her blood pressure, as well as double cataract surgery, colitis and diverticulitis diagnosis, C-Dif,...
This morning, Laura (who blogs as Roaringmouse) joined me for Table Talk on Your Caregiving Journey. You can listen to our show via the player below.
When she was three months pregnant, Laura received the phone call that her husband had been involved in a hit-and-run accident. And, so caregiving began for her.
I asked Laura about her transition into a new life caring for her husband. What was adjustment like, from...
On Thursday, Ellen Rogin, our wealthness expert, joined me for a discussion about prosperity. You can listen to our show via the player, below. (Heads-up: Our show ended abruptly with about five minutes left–I got cut off. I think you’ll still enjoy listening.)
As we enter the holiday season, we hear the word “prosperity”. We’re to have a joyful and prosperous holiday season, a...
During Wednesday’s book club discussion I talked with Denise about how I felt her book, Take Comfort, Reflections of Hope for Caregivers, gives permission to caregivers, permission to live their lives while caring for another. What a wonderful gift to have been given – no strings attached - just given to us by someone who truly has concern for caregivers and a passion for what caregivers...
In December, our action word for our Caregiving Happiness Project is Create.
With holidays and a New Year ahead of us, let’s create new traditions and rituals. I’m going to create:
1. A way to celebrate every day;
2. A ritual that reminds me of my priorities and values.
Please share your action plan for December in our comments section, below.
(Would you like to join our Happiness Project, now in its...
On Tuesday evening, we aired our live call-in episode on Your Caregiving Journey. We asked you to call in and share your answer to this question: What’s your best tip for managing the holidays and caregiving? You can listen to the show via the player, below.
We spoke about participating in holiday celebrations when you might not feel up to a party. G-J called in to share her two tips and Bette talked out a...
On Wednesday, Bette hosted Your Caregiving Journey and led our caregiving book club discussion. Our book club pick for November was my book, Take Comfort, Reflections of Hope for Caregivers. (You can listen to our discussion via the player below.)
Thanks so much to Bette for doing a wonderful job hosting the show. I hope you enjoy!
Note: Stock up on stocking stuffers: We’ve got a great deal on my caregiving...

I am so tired and fed up with resentment. I don’t want to feel this way anymore. I am resentful of my life. I am resentful that I have to be the one who carries all the responsibility for Nicole’s medication, schooling, insurance issues and doctor’s issues. I have resentment about having to be the one to make all the decisions because neither Rick or Nicole are willing to do so … maybe this...
Yesterday, I led our free monthly webinar, 10 Gifts to Give Yourself. I described the gifts you can give yourself—free gifts which require no shopping. Even better, you can open the gifts today, as soon as you decide to receive them. (Did you miss the webinar? No worries! It’s archived here.)
So, I’d love to know, of the 10 gifts I spoke of, which will you give yourself? Please share in our...
