Getting Away
Apr 18 2012 in Elly's Granddaughter by EllysGdaughter
My awesome Hubby and I did get away to Big Sur during my Spring Break as planned. At the last moment there was the possibility that my little sister had a cold and asked if maybe we didn’t want her to come and stay with 91-year-old Grandma. “Of course,” I said, “I want you to come but only if you feel up to it!” My other sister who is a nurse didn’t think it was such a good idea. Well, little sis came and enjoyed her five days with Grandma!
Everything went well for us, too. Our campsite on paper looked like disaster: first site from the main driveway, next to the place to pick up firewood, and next to the creek that was just down from Hwy 1. Ohhh, but it was perfect with none of the concerns listed! Quiet campsite, except for the rushing river and the people next to us with five kids were waaay too quiet to be norma.l
We did do 10 miles of hiking the first day at Pfeiffer State Park. There were quite a number of folks visiting the park but it was comfortable. There was freedom in eating whenever we wanted and whatever we wanted.
The second day was spent at beaches: Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, McWay Falls and Pfeiffer State Beach (purple sand) as well as Andrew Molera State Beach. We then spent our last day at Monterey Bay Aquarium enjoying all the wonderful fish, mammals, birds and people. By the time we got home, I had caught a really bad cold afterwards - must’ve been the people. My awesome Hubby decided we needed to spend the last night in a motel and we did. This was because of the windy, crazy Hwy 1 Road that we’d have to drive in the dark after our day in Monterey. It felt luxurious and the motel night watchman kept an eye on our truck and trailer parked right in front of the Motel. Thanks, Holiday Inn Express!! Our four-hour drive home was leisurely.
We jumped into Easter weekend feeling refreshed. Our schedule has been pretty busy ever since. We were very grateful for this getaway and are planning the next one.

Sounds lovely and oh so refreshing
I’m glad you were able to go and rest not only your bodies but your minds as well knowing grandma was in very good hands

Hi–I love this picture because it shows exactly what a break can do you for you.
You look so relaxed and happy.
And, how wonderful you’re already planning your next get-away. Good for you!!
How did your sister do in your place?

My little sister did a very good job while we were away. I did get to eat some of the soup she left for us. I know Grandma really needed a change in the house or at least a different face! I think Grandma had fun treating her as a guest! Sis also had some knitting so Grandma engaged in that a bit. This last weekend My uncle remarked that his mom really “perked” up and “engaged” as we all took her to my son’s Senior Composition Recital Saturday night. We had 9 folks for dinner beforehand so the house was full! My uncle just moved from Colorado to Oregon and plans to come and visit more often but trusts the decisions we are making with his mom’s care. We appreciated his input and support!

I love how this was a win-win-win all around! Having a new face around helped your Grandma, the knitting helped bond her and your sister, the whole family is supportive, and you and your Hubby had a beautiful vacation. Your decision to spend the last night in a motel and have a leisurely drive home was spot-on.

Hi EllysGdaughter,
I’m so glad you had such a nice time away. And, that you shared your grandmother benefitted from a bit of a change as well.
It’s wonderful to feel the support from family. I’m glad you have that and are experiencing it with hands on and encouragement as well.
Hope you are feeling better and I look forward to hearing about the plans that have started (:
