How Could Emergency Rooms Improve?
Jun 29 2012 in Denise's Blog, Your Caregiving Journey by Denise
Last night, we aired our Hot Topics show on Your Caregiving Journey. Our panel of family caregivers–ejourneys, Richard, and Jane–answered this question, “How can the Hospital Emergency Room visit be improved for you and your caree?” (Bette, who usually joins our panel, had the night off.) You can listen to our show via the player below.
The panelists shared ideas on how to make the wait easier, which amenities would make the wait more comfortable and how technology could make the visit easier. I think you’ll relate to their experiences as well as love their ideas.
So, now it’s your turn: How can the Hospital Emergency Room visit be improved for you and your caree? Please share your comments, below. And, we’ll continue the conversation on Sunday evening at 8 p.m. ET during our Twitter chat.
Updates:
- Table Talk airs tomorrow on Your Caregiving Journey. Chris, who cares for his partner, will join me at 10 a.m. ET (9 a.m. CT, 7 a.m. PT). Listen to our show and join our chat room here.

I have been in ER room way too many times with hubby and I have seen everything from awful to wonderful.
On the awful end…I brought hubby in one night because his right arm suddenly paralyzed…the doctor’s response was…”that’s normal for an SCI”. We came back 10 hours later..and I calmly repeated all that had happened and asked out right “now, do I have to drop the term liability…or do you think you could take things seriously this time?” Another was the ER director who said, “why did you bring him here? We don’t treat for pain.”
On the wonderful side…when we took hubby to ER this past Thursday, the doctor was pre-called and because he’ld been there so many times…they pre-whisked him to an ER room. Now they do have everything on the computer…so check sort of occurs after you are in a room and all they do is ask for a few signatures, proof of ID/insurance. They come back about 20 minutes later intertwined with while the medical staff is reviewing you and give you paperwork copies and returned cards. The process is very smooth. Also the doctors have very good bedside manners. They would come into the room with Greg and generally have researched his case and know background. They seem to be accepting of the caregiver being there.
Hope these help your discussion.
