Bye! Bye! LTD :-)

For those of you who are not familiar with my history of my hubby’s long term disability company (LTD), you may want to read this post.

..

You may remember that Hubby and I were to finally have “the conversation” with the Congressman’s office (C’s), ourselves and the LTD on Thursday June 28, when he went into the hospital. Unfortunately I had to cancel that as all we knew at the time was that he did not have the ability to speak. Sadly that was followed by his passing away on Sunday, July 1.

I had told the the C’s office that I didn’t want my husband’s and my work to go down in vain. He promised me it wouldn’t.

So here’s the conclusion…

Background: The long-term disability industry has zero to do with the government unlike banks, etc.  So, technically it is a contract between us and a business.

But because we had no access to legal recourse (we made too much SSDI for Legal Aid and at the same time we had no money to pay medical bills because of the LTD’s greed), the C’s office agreed to help us in whatever manner they could.

Background: Because my daughter and I were receiving social security benefits (not income!), the LTD claimed that it was not for the purpose of bringing her up as social security said, but “all” income coming into the home was for my husband only and therefore we had to pay them back $52K–overnight. We found $13K in error which left $40K. But they still wanted it overnight. They then decided that we could do payment plan but on their terms! So we gave up paying our medical bills, give up my daughter’s and my health insurance (to bring in funds) and she and I were prohibited from bringing in any type of funding of any kind, whatsoever.

So on the 10th, we re-held the call this time with a very close family friend in my husband’s steed. The call began like this…

“Mrs. G, as you know your husband owed us $40K. He has paid us back $19 through the deductions we took from his check. Then there was $18K in survivor’s benefits which we have gone ahead and applied to the bill. You still owe us $1,100. How do you intend on paying us for that?”

“I can’t. You left me penniless.”

This line of questioning was repeated at least 10 times and then I said:

“If you would like I’ll write 100 times for you that you left me penniless, have it notarized and send it to you.”

“How do you intend on paying us the $1,100?”

“I’m sorry I’m unable to articulate -I have no money, zero or broke any other way then I have. I can’t pay you. You left me broke!”

C’s office and friend started stepping in and told her to stop. C said, “LTD, what is your next question?”

“Mrs. G., now that you’ve sold off your husband’s things we know that you can pay us the $1,100. How soon do you intend on doing this?”

‘My husband is barely in the ground 10 days and the $39K that you have taken from us hasn’t satiated your greed. You still want $1,100 from a penniless woman that you created?! I already think little of you. How low do you want me to go? You are rude, disrespectful, disgusting, unprofessional…(and I continued with another 12 adjectives. I still can’t figure out how I didn’t swear!).”  Then I was silent.

Finally C’s office stepped up and said to the LTD, “Do you have anything else to ask?”

LTD again asked how was I going to pay the $1,100. Now both men, the C and our friend, told her to stop immediately. Wasting no time C said, “LTD, I think you are done here. Mrs. G. would you like me to work with them from this point forward?”

“Be my guest!!”

Conclusion: C’s office made arrangements with them to eat the $1,100 (I told him I didn’t need to know how!) and went ahead and arranged for SS benefits for my daughter and I. Additionally, per the Congressman’s office, the LTD can no longer come near my daughter and I.

In a day and age where politicians are under the veiled wall of not doing much for the consumer, I’m very pleased to say I found one who was different!

I think my hubby would be pleased!

The Roaring Mouse.

>>Oh! PS!  I always made it very clear to the Congressman’s office I’d be happy to testify on this event, any time, anywhere.
