Giving meaning to the day

Activites exist within the moments

By Denise M. Brown

Do you and your care recipient go through your daily routine with scowls and eyeballs rolled toward the sky? Breathe some life to your regular duties--and turn them into meaningful activities:

1. Make music a part of your routine. Sing together when you give your care recipient a bath. Dance while dinner cooks. Hum when the folding the laundry.

2. Delegate duties to your care recipient that drag you down. For instance, do you dread that question every morning before your husband leaves for work: What's for dinner tonight? While you may like to say, I don't know; what did you plan on cooking?, you could instead look to your mother to be the menu planner. Ask her to share some of her favorite recipes and create mini-menus for the family's dinner meals.

3. Does your mother seem to hover when you're folding the laundry? Throw her some clean underwear and socks--let her get in the action.

4. When your husband begins plans in the spring for the summer garden, be sure to include plans for your grandfather's own growings.

5. When it's time to shop for gifts for the holidays, ask your mother to research options in the mail-order catalogs you receive.
