Your Caregiving Battles

Tips to Temper Your Flame

During the eye of the storm, you may be tempted to let your anger get the best of you. Instead, try these tips:

--Leave the room. Walking away from your care recipient, even for a minute, can take the smoke out of your fire.

--Take a break. If your anger seems to be your prominent emotion, then you need to take time off. Ask a family member or friend to take over for an afternoon or evening. Make sure you take advantage of the community services, such as home health care, adult day care, short-term nursing home stays, available to you and your care recipient.

--Laugh. Instead of fuming, should you really be laughing? Recognize, and appreciate, the humor in your day-to-day experiences. Laughter is contagious; you may be able to laugh your your care recipient into a better mood.

--Keep your perspective. Is the situation really worth getting angry about? Understand your limits as a caregiver, as well as the limitations (both physical and mental) of your care recipient.

--Count to ten. Nothing fancy and nothing new, but still very effective. By making yourself think about the anger, you will have great success in letting the anger ebb.
