Celebrating Your Caregiving Successes

By Denise M. Brown, Publisher and Editor

You know successes as a caregiver everyday--but you may just be too close to the situation to know it. To help you recognize your caregiving successes, we've come up with some examples of successful caregiving:

1. You find an activity that you and your mother both enjoy--and that transcends your mother's illness. Now, you spend an hour every day as friends, not as caregiver and care recipient.

2. You join the Alzheimer's Association, Cancer Society or Arthritis Foundation and learn all that you can about your care recipient's illness and disease.

3. You take the time every week to enjoy at least one good book or movie rental. Popcorn is optional.

4. You plan a day of fun for you and your care recipient at least once a month.

5. You take a well-deserved vacation--and feel good about the arrangements you have made for your care recipient in your absence.

6. You plan ahead by completing your own advance directives.

7. You encourage your care recipient to continue enjoying his own hobbies or interests and make sure his needed supplies are always well-stocked.

8. You involve your care recipient in the day-to-day happenings of your household. Your care recipient sets the dinner table, folds the laundry, and determines the week's menu--and is much happier for doing so.

9. You make sure your future financial independence is secure; you consult with a certified financial planner and stick to a savings and investment program that works for you.
