How Do I Find a Qualified Contractor?

You’ve made the decision: It’s time to add a wheelchair ramp. But, now do you find a contractor that’s right for the job?

Extended Home Living Services, based in Wheeling, Ill., offers the following suggestions when choosing a contractor:

--Ask friends and fellow family caregivers who have had similar projects completed for recommendations.

--Hire a licensed and bonded contractor or other professional with the proper liability and workers compensation insurance.

--Get estimates in writing.

--Hire a contractor who guarantees his or her work and products, preferably someone who has experience in home modifications.

--Ask for a written agreement and provide only a small down payment. Make the final payment only after the project is completed.

--Make any changes in writing.

--Refrain from signing a certificate of completion or making final payments until the work is done to your satisfaction.

--Check with your local Better Business Bureau regarding the contractor's record.

--Ask for references—and then check them out.
