Hope: Friend or Foe

By Denise M. Brown

My friend, Hope, gets me up in the morning. She leads me to believe that this day will be a good day, that this day will be answers to some of my struggles, relieve to some of my burdens. Hope—I never leave home without her.

But, sometimes Hope tricks me into believing that what is wrong will somehow become right—-even when what is wrong is beyond fixing. Hope lived with me during my first marriage and kept me there too long.

When does Hope turn from friend to foe?

When facing medical treatment decisions for a loved one, the hope that a cure or a treatment is on the horizon exists. It’s a possibility, but is it a reality? As you face these decisions, look at Hope. And, ask yourself, is Hope keeping me on the true path—true to you, true to your care recipient, true to your quality of lives?
