(Each month, we take a closer look at an aspect of your caregiving experience. In May, we're taking a closer look at incontinence care issues.) Personal care Incontinent? Not my mother! By Denise M. Brown In compiling information for this issue, which focuses on incontinence and skin care, I’m reminded of Florence Render, one of our five Caregiver of the Year Award winners in 2000. At the time we profiled her, Florence recently had considered nursing home placement for her mother. But, what had turned her away was the nursing home's statement that her mother would have to wear disposable briefs. Here's how Florence reacted, as excerpted from her featured profile in the December 2000 issue of Caregiving: Florence has been down that road--and will not return to it. When her mother returned home after rehab for a fractured hip at a local nursing facility, Florence spent two weeks working with her mother to "retrain her bladder": The facility had allowed her mother to wear briefs, an unacceptable and unnecessary solution in Florence's eyes. Today, her mother no longer needs to wear disposable briefs, but instead understands to tell Florence of her needs so that Florence can assist her. Incontinence is a difficult situation for all involved--the family caregiver and the care recipient. Incontinence occurs—and, armed with the proper information, family caregivers can be comfortable managing it. But, it doesn't have to be a life sentence, so to speak. If your care recipient suffers from incontinence, be sure you've discussed treatment options with your care recipient's physician and health care team. And, as always, keep up your great work. As family caregivers, you are brave and brilliant. You shine. Index of Articles Caring for an Older Adult's Skin |
