Your Caregiving Depression

When You Care, You Feel the Depression for Two

By Denise M. Brown, Editor and Publisher

You keep the day humming along for your care recipient--ensuring meals are provided, medication is dispensed, activities are available, safety is ensured. And, as you take on all these responsibilities, you can't help but take on some of your care recipient's emotions--especially depression.

And, that's not good, considering you may already be depressed! You've lost your freedom, your friends, your "rainy day" bank account, perhaps even your job. Now add to your losses your care recipient's losses: Friends, family members, abilities, mobility, independence.

Ah! No wonder the inside of your bed covers sometimes seem the best alternative!

Depression among family members caring for a family member is not a new topic: Tipper Gore has openly discussed her depression when she cared for her young son after his terrible car accident. Suzanne Mintz, co-founder, National Family Caregivers Association, has spoken of her two episodes of clinical depression as she has cared for her husband and her mother.

Members of our online support groups openly discuss their struggle to manage their depression; some have struggle with depression throughout their lives, but their caregiving role exacerbates it. Others find that their caregiving role causes their depression.

In this issue, we offer ideas on how to get help for your care recipient's depression and yours. Depression can be treated--and should should be. You owe it to yourself!
