Channeling the changes

You've changed--but your friends, family haven't

Caregiving has changed you. Sometimes for the worse: You can't sleep through the night anymore and you often grow impatient with long lines at the grocery store and at the bank.

   You used to sleep through earthquakes. You used to have the patience of a saint.

   But, it's also changed you in a good way. Boy, you appreciate the blessings in your life--and remember to give thanks for them daily. You laugh hardest at a good joke. And, most of all, you freely express your love for the family and friends in your life.

   You've changed and for the most part, it's good. So, why does it seem that the ladies at church seem to talk about you behind your back? Or, your best friend of 30 years seems to look for any opportunity to slyly insult you? Five years ago, five years before caregiving, these episodes would have never occurred. But, with personal growth often comes the unexpected--family members and friends who suddenly don't wish you well.

   In this month’s Special Caregiving Focus, we'll talk about toxic relationships and how your caregiving experience may have brought them to light. We'll offer suggestions on how to manage these experiences. But, most of all, we congratulate you on your growth!
