Health Care Decisions

Making the best decisions so regrets can't live

By Denise M. Brown, Editor, Caregiving! newsletter and Caregiving.com

I worked a health fair about two weeks ago. The vendors across from me—two women in their late fifties—were very nice and friendly (and very free with the gift of free candy). I struck up a conversation with them; the usual: What do you do?

As I described my work, one of the women nodded her head. I cared for my mother about ten years ago, she said. It was hard, harder than anything I’ve ever done, she said.

I encouraged her to continue. Well, she said, I think I just put her through so much. I just wanted her to better, so we went from one doctor to the next, from one hospital to the next, from one rehab center to the next. I think all she wanted was to just be. But, I couldn’t. I worried so much about not doing enough. And, really, I did too much.

She finished her story with haunting words: I still regret that to this day. It’s still hard for me to talk about.

Phew!

In this issue, we provide information to help when you face medical treatment decisions on behalf of your aging relative. We’ve included interviews with family caregivers and health care professionals designed to help you make the best possible decision for your aging relative, yourself and your family. Because I don’t want to meet you in ten years and hear the regret in your voice. No regrets!
