Miracle Meter

In giving more thought about miracles, I thought it would be fun if we counted our miracles. So, I’ve created a miracle meter for us. Any time a miracle visits you, just come back to this page, share about it in the comments section and I’ll add it to the Miracle Meter.

For our purposes, we’re describing a miracle as any event, insight or change that meets your needs or solves a problem. Most important, this event, insight or change seems to be out of your control, as if it happened by a force greater than you. (I’m keeping our definition as general as possible to encompass a variety of beliefs.)

Miracles can be as small as having someone open the door for you when you most need it, to as big as unexpectedly receiving money, to as awesome as suddenly finding a different doctor who better understands your caree’s diagnosis.

When a miracle happens, be sure to let us know so I can add it to our count.

Note: As of August 11, 2011, I’ve counted four miracles (Trish, G-J, Bette and me). I put our goal as 1,000,000 because I’m expecting a million miracles for us. (I’m updating our meter going forward based on your comments, below.)

[progpress title="Miracle Meter" goal="1000000" label="miracles" current="24"]

I received an e-mail from Marah’s school at the beginning of the week. This will be Marah’s first year attending school.

Marah’s best friend is at the school that she will be attending. We waited until the first of August to register.

Apparently, the day before the school received our paperwork, a child in Marah’s friend’s class withdrew to move.

Marah will be starting school, with her best friend – in her class (:

I just met another sandwich caregiver.

I was talking about this with Denise on Monday – wishing for a connection such as this – someone in a similar situation.

I love recognizing the miracles as just that – miracles. (:

Woohoo!! I’m updating the meter next… I think it also helps to say what you want out loud, to really own it. The Miracle Maker knows just what to make. :)

I was listening to G-J on table talk and thought about this miracle.

I joined this website in March of this year. At some point either right before or right after I believe that God put it into my heart to go back to school to get a pharmacy technician degree. I thought this was quite funny since for one my husband has the car all day and he doesn’t get home until at the earliest 6:30 p.m. so it would be hard for me to go to an actual school and two because are finances are very tight due to Rick losing his job and taking another at half of what he was making.

I knew if this was something that was meant to be then God would have to provide. In April I was awarded the caregifter award through here which I used to enroll in Penn Foster (which wasn’t the online school I would have chosen given the choice). I believe this was a God thing and/or miracle.

I would also consider our trip in February to Hawaii a miracle but that is a longer story.

    Hugs:o)

I had a bit of a sleepless night on Saturday so finally got up to write in my journal. This year is going to be quite different with the kids in school. I’m worried and maybe a bit fearful (:

I’ve been a mother and a caregiver for quite some time, and can’t imagine my hours changing (and theirs’ changing too).

As I wrote it was clear that I needed to remember what I do…I teach. And, I particularly loved teaching Kindergarten. The plan (before our moves and before my mother’s stroke) was that when the kids went to school – I would too (:

Sunday morning when I sat down in church – I opened the bulletin to find in large letters – KINDERGARTEN TEACHER NEEDED for our Sunday School program. I can’t tell you the feeling that came over me – how grateful I was to see this.

Today I called one of the Home Health Agencies we use. The aide that comes on Thursday mornings can come on Sunday mornings.

    Truly a miracle for me.

A few months ago I started in a volunteer position that we should name, “Iceberg” as in the iceberg that was hit by the Titanic. it looked small on the top but was huge on the bottom! We’ve been hit by a potential lawsuit, have discovered we are delinquent in payments to the state’s Attorney General’s office and had a parent yelling at us. There’s been a lot of good, too, but mostly there’s just a lot.

Today I thought that I need a secretary to help with some of this. I opened an e-mail and one of the volunteers was saying he position isn’t taking much right now and how can she help! She’s my new Administrative Assistant! Truly a miracle!

Last night, one of the pipes under our bathroom sink let go. I store incontinence supplies in that cabinet. The supplies absorbed the water!

Although I feel badly about the packages of underwear and disposable bed covers that we lost – they saved our floor and woodwork. What a mess that would have been. (:

No. 14! And, thanks for the giggle–I got a kick out of that one. :)

      Hi Bette:

Oh my goodness. That would have been a mess and cost you much more in damages than the supplies cost you I’m sure.

I believe that this is a miracle for me. I won one of the gift bags earlier in the week during We Break for Summer. I was so excited as I won one of the basket in the spring and enjoyed it very much. I use the basket to keep Nicole’s supplies for her nebulizer that I use everyday.

Anyway, I didn’t know anything about the grand prize drawing until maybe Thursday when I was listening to show on forgiveness with Bette but didn’t really pay attention. I thought it was Friday when I realized what it was and thought dear God please let me win this as I could really use the help even though I’m not sure what kind of help (except maybe some sanity). I brushed it off and thought I wouldn’t win it. I was okay with it and didn’t expect it. Denise emailed me this morning about the new fall classes and told me that I had won the grand prize. I burst in to tears and thanked God for such a wonderful blessing. I’m still in shock. I even went back and read the email again to make sure it was true.

I truly hope that I will get some peace and clarity from this.

We had Robert stay with us this long weekend and since his bday was today, I wanted to take treats to his Day Program to celebrate. I went to Costco yesterday to pick up a giant cake but they were closed! Yikes! I decided the only solution would be to bake 75 cupcakes so that’s what we did. My miracle was that my hubby (who is quite the baker) jumped right in and ran the kitchen like a military operation. I just followed orders. We were done within a couple of hours and just in time to have a bday dinner for Robert. That was my miracle yesterday! (People at Day Program were very excited to see all the cupcakes). :-)

      September 6, 2011

Wow!! That’s awesome! That’s our sweetest miracle (and No. 16) yet.

    September 7, 2011

We have had rain here in central PA since last Wednesday. It is still raining today. Roads are closing, schools closed at noon today and rumor has it, no school tomorrow. The creeks and ponds look like rivers – behind our house there is a family of ducks – they think they are in a pond, but it is actually a road.

Marah continues to struggle with school -in part because of this weather. Since we lived in Oklahoma (Marah was 3) she is very concerned about any weather changes. Marah had lots of tears this morning (yesterday as well). It was very difficult taking her and yet I knew she was okay. Greg and I spent most of the morning on the phone with her teacher, principal and the guidance counselor. Adjusting to school for Marah is going to be a bit more difficult than we thought. Along with the routine of the classroom, comes some math challenges as well.

So, our morning came with challenges. The calls, my mother had two other incidents that I wish I had caught sooner, and school was let out early – I had no coverage…I might as well add in, Abrah was told last night because of my “time issues” (I was 7 min. late taking them to a movie on Monday) – her boyfriend is not allowed to ride anywhere with us for a while…

By noon, I found coverage, picked up the kids and called Greg to see if he could meet us for lunch.

As we were sitting inside Wendy’s, a lady (who I had never seen before)came over to me from behind. She put her arm around me and said, “I just wanted to tell you, you have a beautiful family”. As I looked up, she was heading out the door to get into her car.

I truly felt like she was an angel. A kind word on a bad day is sometimes all you need.

Well, I think I have miracle #18: I got word today that the television at Robert’s care facility would be working again on Friday. Here’s what happened: The home had basic cable but shut it off because of CA budget cuts (that’s what they said anyway). They told me I could pay for it if I wanted Robert to have television. Robert was left without Jeopardy & Wheel of Fortune, not to mention Sunday church on television. We weren’t asking for HBO or Showtime — I just wanted basic channels for the guy! During his ISP, it was suggested (by another care facility person) that the home get a converter box and it will cost next to nothing. This was a couple of weeks ago and I had to keep bugging them about it but finally got an email today saying they decided to pay for the converter box and it will be installed on Friday! Yay! It’s a small miracle but, to Robert, it’s a big one. It may have helped that I told them they were interfering with his right to practice his religious beliefs. :-)

Can I include a miracle that was someone else’s? Friday, Steve and I were at an alzheimer’s conference. We sat down for lunch with two other couples we know. A woman asked if she could join us as we had empty seats. Her husband was diagnosed two years ago with MCI and Parkinson’s. They have never done anything to get help and have never contacted the Alzheimer’s Association. While sitting with us, between the six of us, one couple had seen the same doctor as her husband has seen and were able to give input, all of us were able to suggest another doctor, and I was able to introduce her to someone from the Alzheimer’s Association who spoke to her and signed her up for a seven week class for her and her husband. Truly, a miracle for her.

    October 6, 2011

G-J, That is an awesome miracle! You created a miracle for this woman and her husband and one day, she’ll most likely pass it along to someone else! The ripple effects of miracles are amazing. :-)

    October 6, 2011

I almost forgot! I may have another one but will let Denise make the call because it may just be something good and not rise the level of miracle. Since Robert was missing out on Church television, I emailed a couple of big name churches that are on tv and asked them if they would donate a DVD of their program to Robert. One responded with a YES! Joel Osteen’s church (Lakewood Church) is sending Robert a DVD and a book. Yay! Now, I may not agree with everything Mr. Osteen says but a DVD from a church is going to make Robert happy and this is about Robert! Woohoo!

    • Denise

      October 6, 2011

Oh, I hope the power of being the Decider of Miracles doesn’t go to my head!

My verdict on Robert receiving a DVD and book from Joel Osteen: It’s a miracle! Here’s why: The email had to receive the right person who could create the right action. That’s no small feat.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have Miracle No. 20. !!

      • Trish

        October 6, 2011

Thanks, Denise (or should I say, “Decider of Miracles”)! :-) The person responding was super nice and, I must say, I received a “no” from another church so you are right: it really was a miracle that the right person read the email and agreed. Love the Miracle Meter!

To hear that one church said no to your request just rubs me the wrong way. This is what the church is suppose to do. They are to reach out and help those who need it.

I applaud Joel Osteen for donating the DVD and book.

This was a miracle of faith. My husband’s central neuropathic pain requires a very unorthodox use of an over the counter pain medication that he uses at 4 times the prescribed rate verses the prescribed rate on the box. If it wasn’t for this (via the suggestion of his neurosurgeon and a doctor at Brigham &Young) then he couldn’t be at home safely. For over a year now I have believed that there would be a program to help with the cost of this. Insuance doesn’t cover it. There are no programs that cover this. Even the corporate manufacturer…Today I found out on a wild gamble that it can be covered on a community voucher program that we participate in. We are so thankful for this miracle!

Hi–Here’s my latest miracle: I have dreamed of recording one of my books for about three years. Recently, a benefactor made that dream come true. And, not only that, but the benefactor made sure I had everything I needed to turn the recording into a CD. Truly a miracle! :) (And, this is No. 22!!)

Not knowing our situation right now, a friend called and asked if she could stop by tonight.

She brought a plate of whoopie pies and wanted to talk with me about staying with my mother some evening in the next week or so (she is a nurse), so that we could all go out.

I am so truly grateful when I feel as though my “Job Jar” has been pulled from (:

    February 19, 2012

This is a week overdue…but it is a helpful miracle none-the-less. Last week I went to my husband’s primary physician to pick up 4 months worth of one of his medications (not Delsym) that is now being provided to him for free for. I didn’t know about this. Apparently this was via an app that his insurance company field rep sent in. A wonderful blessing!

My car is being worked on today – so we have one car and many people that need to go in various directions. I also need to make an unplanned doctor’s visit for myself. I called the aides that generally help us and both were unavailable – my neighbor was not home. I called the Home Health Agency we use and they checked into three different possibilities for us.

Everyone was able to get where they needed to go – on time (: I have Greg’s car and the Agency was able to reach someone to help us -someone that we know!

All is covered and I can keep my doctor’s visit. (:

    • Trish

    February 25, 2012

It was an easy, in a way, stupid need (actually more of a want) and poof its gone.
I wanted your new book, Help. and I went and won it without knowing it.

Being new, I was just browsing different blogs and articles on the site to get familiar with the people here and to see what this site offered. So I somehow got to 6 words, whats a successful day. I briefly skimmed the main post but read all of the following posts ie all the poems and quickly made my own, some not even being about successful days (I hadn’t found the bad days one yet).

The yesterday, I keep browsing and find out about the book so I click the link to buy it, multiple times throughout the day, I might add because I kept talking myself out of it, going “no, i need to be using our money for my mom. She needs xyz, I don’t need another book which I wont have time to read(I really do have time).” “I don’t need it” Just finding different reasons not to buy it.

I get the message today that I won it so I am like HUH? I find my post again and read through the first post and it does say it is a contest and you can win the books.

So there it is, there are some miracles of finding this group, more then just venting. It can affect you more then you know it.

I wanted the book, now problem is fixed.

    March 20, 2012

I was called my husband at work to let him know that our son needed administered to and the pain to be rebuked. The need was immediate and pressing. I asked him who he wanted me to call since I couldn’t leave to pick him up from work to come. At that moment, a good friend of ours came up the front steps onto the porch! My husband said to go ahead and ask him to do it. When our friend saw the state of affairs going on, he asked me what my son needed. I looked at him and said he needs to have the pain rebuked, can you do it? His eyes got big and he immediately said he could. He knelt next to my son who was lying in my lap and laid his hands on his head and began the blessing. He first commanded him to be at peace, my son got quieter and relaxed a little, then our friend rebuked the pain. Within a few seconds my son got quiet, relaxed, and closed his eyes. There was a beautiful peace and calm and we were grateful. That counts as two miracles in my book…showing up at just the right moment and then the pain disappearing. What do you think? – Terri
