Weekly Caregiver Tip (November 6, 2000) Your Personal Wellness I recently heard Oprah Winfrey say that taking care of yourself is the best way to love yourself. With that in mind, here's a list of ways to stay healthy. --See your physician and dentist regularly. Follow your physicians' orders in terms of diet, exercise and medications. --Give yourself self-examinations (for breast and prostate) monthly. Report any lumps or concerns immediately to your physician. --Eat right although allowing for periodic "treats". A healthy diet does not mean self-deprivation. --Consume alcohol in moderation. --Find a support system, such as a friend or family member, who listens with a non-judgmental ear. A good support system will remind you to take care of yourself. --Respect your body. Your body will let you know when it needs rest and nutrition. --Determine your limits and learn to say "no". Saying "no" is hard, but living with the results of your "yes" is even worse. It's not your job to be everyone's "caregiver". --Ask questions of your physicians and your care recipient's physicians if you have any doubts or misgivings. If you are unhappy with the answers you receive, find other health care professionals who can help. --Write in a journal on a regular basis. Jot down your thoughts about caregiving, your hopes and dreams, your frustrations and disappointments. Don't hold back!
