Tell us about the nominee's caregiving story.
Louisa realized that the caregiver is often overlooked in these situations. The focus is usually on the person who needs the care or even the disease/illness itself. She has started an organization called Your Caregiver Journey. Through her work on behalf of caregivers, Louisa has organized various resources for families in many differing types of caregiving: cancer, Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, depression, elderly, etc. She offers support groups as well as one-on-one counseling, consulting, art classes and other avenues of support.

Tell us about the support the nominee provides. What makes it innovative? How has the support made caregiving easier or better?

How does the nominee inspire others?
I have been involved in her “Caregivers Having Coffee” weekly support group. She has made such a difference in how I approach my own life while caring for my mom who has dementia and was recently diagnosed with cancer. She’s encouraged me to not neglect myself or my relationship with my husband. Another group member has begun her own photography business and others have taken up other forms of artistic expression.

Please provide testimonials of family caregivers or former family caregivers who benefit from this support.
I can testify of Louisa’s care for me as my lifeline in dealing with my mom who has been living with me for the past 2 1/2 years. She spends time talking with me, encouraging me and offering help, advice and pointing me to other organizations that are necessary in the care of my mom. I can’t imagine anyone more worthy of the Caregiver Visionary Award.

"Louisa has worked with individual clients, but has also been working with groups of caregivers. She has been able to maintain meaningful relationships with her individual clients and to build valuable connections amongst the groups that she brings together. She has also started to offer her expertise to organizations that have not offered programming to caregivers in the past. She is encouraging organizations to focus on the needs of their clients' families and loved ones, which is so crucial when they are the primary caregivers. Louisa's program has been well-received and she is continuing to build partnerships with individual clients as well as community organizations." ~ Lauren Fogle
