We’re pleased to offer an opportunity for you to share your experiences through focus groups which we will hold at the conference. Please feel free to sign up for the following focus groups that best meet your experiences:

Dementia Questionnaire

Afeez Hazzan from State University of New York, The College at Brockport joins us for the first time to lead focus groups at NCC19.

Research Goals: The goals of the current study are to use feedback provided by family caregivers of people with dementia to generate a questionnaire for measuring the quality of care provided to people living with dementia.

Research Objectives: The objectives of the study include: (1) to conduct focus group and one-on-one interviews with approximately 25 family caregivers of people with dementia at a national conference of family caregivers; (2) to obtain family caregivers’ feedback on a draft questionnaire for measuring quality of care provided to people with dementia; (3) to utilize family caregivers’ feedback to generate additional questions for the questionnaire; (4) to finalize the questionnaire for future psychometric testing.

Activities: During the focus group and one-on-one interviews, caregivers will be provided with a checklist of all the items generated for the questionnaire from the previous interviews conducted. Drawing on their experience as family caregivers of persons with dementia, interested family caregivers will be asked to evaluate the content of the draft questionnaire, as well as its relevance to caregiving in dementia. In addition, caregivers will be asked to suggest additional questions that could be included in the questionnaire.

Data obtained from these qualitative interviews will be analyzed to generate domains that can be used to refine the questionnaire. Once psychometric testing has been completed, the questionnaire will be available for researchers, healthcare practitioners, and policy makers to use in measuring the quality of care provided by family caregivers of people with dementia.

You will receive a $10 gift card for participating.

Prela on behalf of Genworth Financial

Tobin Ward returns to our conference to lead four focus groups on behalf of a Genworth subsidiary, Prela Service Company. Currently, Prela’s primary service offering is regarding recommending local, vetted services to caregivers (anything from in-home care nurses, facilities and equipment purchase/rentals, etc.). In the future, Prela would like to expand their offerings in the technology space including (but not limited to) apps, websites, interactive games, coaching, hotlines, etc. and they would like to hear from current caregivers on technological needs they have as it relates to caregiving in today’s world.

The research would be designed to accomplish the following goals:
1. Understand what current and future technological needs family caregivers require/anticipate requiring to fulfill their Caregiving duties.
2. Determine to what extent family caregivers might utilize various caregiving apps (i.e. “Facebook for the Elderly” or “Yelp for LTC Services”) to assist with their responsibilities and, if so, what features they would want to see in such an app.
3. Measure the extent of usefulness of a “LTC hotline” among family caregivers and determine if anything like this exists in the market today. Define what topics family caregivers might call the hotline with and what types of assistance they would expect to get from such a service.
4. Quantify how much family caregivers might be willing to pay for some of these products associated with technology, for apps or for access to a hotline to acquire a family caregiver advice/services.

To participate in a focus group, you:

  • Can be any age and caring for a loved one of any age or relation
  • Must have been in a CURRENT caregiving role for a minimum of one year
  • Must be the primary family caregiver and the caree must reside at either at home (the caree’s home or the family caregiver’s home)
