Drawing on her Christian faith, she encourages us to love our suffering neighbor. As founder of the caregiving ministry Wisdom of the Wounded, Karen has a special place in her heart for full-time caregivers. She has witnessed firsthand—in caregiving workshop discussions, church programs, and in her own caregiving practice—the unique challenges that long-term caregivers face when they walk alongside family or friends during extended illness or disability.

Karen, who has a Master’s Degree in Religious Education from Western Seminary, is co-author of The Compassionate Congregation, and her one-minute inspirational radio spots air daily across the United States via the Truth Network Christian radio stations. In addition to leading her ministry, Karen is also actively engaged in caregiving relationships. From providing respite to friends who are full time caregivers, to caring for a loved one with cancer or helping someone recover from a stroke, Karen lives her calling. Karen resides in Holland, Michigan with her husband Larry. Karen enjoys baking cookies with her grandkids, reading, going for hikes with Larry and planning her next speaking event where she can connect with fellow caregivers.

Session #1

5 Smooth Stones: Tips for Facing Your Caregiving Giants
Friday 9:30 a.m.
In the Bible, David made a choice to fight a giant who was threatening David and his country. We also fight “giants” every day. What is your giant? What causes you stress, zaps you of your energy, and robs you of peace? Is your giant a relationship, a responsibility, a nasty habit, or an unhelpful attitude?

David was armed with five smooth stones to equip him to defeat the giant Goliath. Using the stones as a metaphor, Karen Mulder, founder of Wisdom of the Wounded Ministry, will lead you through a session that helps you face the giants in your life.

With a warm and inviting style, Karen draws on her faith, Christian Scripture and real-life stories that will show you ways to respond to the many emotions caregivers face such as anger, frustration and grief. Please join Karen to gain insights into how face your giant with renewed confidence.
