29 Ways to Show the Love: Be a Secret Valentine

love-you-907816_640Each day in February, we’ll share a way that family members and friends can help the family caregiver in their lives. (A family caregiver is an individual who cares for a family member or friend, just like you.) Through our campaign, we hope to create awareness of what family caregivers do and how others can help.

Today’s tip comes from G-J (@g-j), who cared for her parents and now cares for her husband: Take the caree out and help him or her buy a Valentine for the family caregiver!

Why today’s tip is important: A shopping excursion you arrange creates a powerful shift in the dynamic between the family caregiver and the caree, even if only for a short time. Typically, a family caregiver gives and a caree receives. You've now created an opportunity for the caree to give and for the family caregiver to receive.

A family caregiver can't help but sometimes feel unappreciated. A Valentine from the caree is a simple yet powerful demonstration of love and gratitude. And, a caree often cannot do something we often take for granted: Shop for a card or a box of candy or a bouquet of flowers. Helping a caree purchase a Valentine's allows the caree to feel independent and to enjoy giving.

When you act as a secret Valentine, you create meaningful moments for both the family caregiver and the caree.
