29 Ways to Show the Love: Call to Check In

iphone-1032781_640Each day in February, we’ll share a way that family members and friends can help the family caregiver in their lives. (A family caregiver is an individual who cares for a family member or friend, just like you.) Through our campaign, we hope to create awareness of what family caregivers do and how others can help.

This tip comes from me and I care for my parents: Call the family caregiver on a regular basis to find out how he or she is doing. Listen with an open heart and a non-judgmental ear. You don’t have to solve the problems -- just listening is the best help you can offer.

Why this tip is important: We often have so much happen in our day that we don't have time to reach out to our friends and family members we love. When you call us, it's like, Phew! You give us a chance to catch our breath, to feel the love and to connect with the world outside of caregiving. When you listen to how we're doing, you give us a chance to push our reset button. We just need a chance to let it out so we can keep going.

So true! This tip in action, has meant the world to us. When my hubby got a diagnosis, our out of state kids (adult kids) wanted to know how they could help....they wished they lived closer. They wanted to be here for us but felt because of the distance, they couldn't do much. They told us to call any time we need to talk. We do that, but more often than not, they are calling us to see how its going...\"to check in\". Those phone calls are just as helpful as the kids who can physically be here to help us. \r\nTheir phone calls, hearing their voices, gives us the message there's someone out there that cares, we are loved, we aren't alone in our situation. We can vent and they willing to just listen, they will help us sort thru situations & decisions, help find solutions. Best of all, some of those \"calls to check in\" are to talk about something going on with them & wanting to share the latest things they have been up. We hang up feeling their love and feeling better connected to life. What a blessing a phone call can be!
