Because You Care, Wear Green on April 11

Denise
WearGreenI continue to think more about the loneliness and isolation that can be common when you care for a family member or friend. Wouldn't it be great if you could somehow spot another family caregiver in the crowd?

So, let's try it. On Friday, April 11, wear green to bring awareness to the family caregiver experience.

Use your green as a conversation starter. If you see a colleague or stranger or co-worker wearing green on April 11, strike up a conversation. "We're both wearing green today," you can say. "I'm wearing green because I care for my (insert your relationship to your caree) and am creating awareness about the caregiving experience. How about you?"

Maybe they're wearing green because they just love the color. Or, maybe, they, too, care for a family member.

Our event can connect you to family caregivers in your community and online. Be sure to tell us about your experiences and share your photos on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram; use #caregreen as your hashtag. If you connect with a stranger wearing green who turns out to be a family caregiver, take a photo. And, we love selfies so be sure to share one.

On April 11, we hope to:

  • Help you start a conversation about your caregiving experience.

  • Connect you with other family caregivers.

  • Help you share support with other family caregivers.

  • Lessen the loneliness of the caregiving experience.

I selected the color green for a few reasons. Hopefully, we'll be enjoying spring green on April 11. I also hope you already have green in your closet. Most important, I chose green because of Donna Baldwin, a 1999 winner of our Caregiver of the Year contest. Before Donna cared for her mom, she had plastic plants in her home; she couldn't keep a plant alive. As she cared for her mom, she developed a green thumb, eventually replacing most of her plastic plants for live ones. Caregiving can be such a difficult situation. It also can be an experience that fosters growth. Let's be sure to talk about that, too, on April 11.

Help us spread the word about "Because You Care, Wear Green on April 11":

1. Share this post on your social network (Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest).

2. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper. In your letter, share about your caregiving experience, what challenges you face as a family caregiver and your wish that others wear green on April 11. Feel free to include a link to this post.

3. Post our Wear Green flyer wherever appropriate in your community or workplace. (Be sure to ask before you post.) I've attached the flyer as a Word document so you can edit and revise the flyer as you see fit.

I look forward to seeing you in green on April 11.
