CareGifters: Giving to Gwyn

CareGifters: Giving to Gwyn

Through our CareGifters program, we fund caregiving solutions, one family caregiver at a time.

This month, we're funding solutions for @Gwyn, who cares for her mom. Gwyn and I had a discussion on the site Sunday night about the financial difficulties of caregiving. She currently receives two hours per day of help from Medicaid and pays for the remaining help out of pocket. "I have a full time job that doesn’t pay very well," she wrote on the site. "I have taken out a loan on my retirement plan (it wasn’t big to begin with) and have gone through all of it and of course now have that big bill to pay back every month, too. I’ve been paying a caregiver to come in during the day and now I can’t pay that bill."

I suggested she apply for help through our CareGifters program, which she did. Our Selection Committee gave an immediate approval.

On her application, Gwyn explained her need for the  money:
"It will help me try to keep her at home for at least a while longer. I am negotiating with my employer to take a partial medical leave of absence to cut down on paying an outside caregiver. Of course after my vacation time runs out, it will mean reduced income. I'm trying to find a way to sell things I own to generate more money as well."

Gwyn also describes her top three challenges:
"The financial struggles override all other challenges for me right now so that is number one. Other challenges are getting enough sleep since when I get home at night I have to care for her and she doesn't sleep through the night. I have basically given up any kind of life outside of work and home to try to keep her in her own home (where I now live with her). I guess another challenge is that I feel very guilty that she is outliving both her money and my own and I may be forced to consider a nursing home. I know she will hate it. She was in one briefly after a hospitalization and cried to come home to be with her cat."

Today, we’re raising $500 to help Gwyn, who will be our tenth CareGifters recipient. You can donate via the button below. You can donate as little (just $5) or as much as you can–we are very grateful for any contribution you make. After Gwyn receives her $500, she’ll share how she used it and its impact on our websites ( and and on Your Caregiving Journey talk show. You can donate below.

CareGifters is operated through The Center for Family Caregivers, a charitable organization. We use PayPal to process your donation. (Please note: The Center for Family Caregivers does not currently have tax exempt status with the IRS so donations are not tax deductible.)

Thanks so much to all who help!!!
