Celebrating LGBTQ+ Caregivers

Jenn Chan

As an LGBTQ+ caregiver, I think it is truly special that there are two months in the calendar year that celebrate both of my communities. June is Pride month, which celebrates the dignity and equality of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and folks with other gender identities and sexual orientation. November is National Family Caregivers Month, which honors the work of family caregivers and supports their well-being. Both months bring awareness to the history, issues, and the lives of LGBTQ+ people and family caregivers.

The LGBTQ+ Caregiver community embraces both identities of LGBTQ+ people and family caregivers. LGBTQ+ people experience and overcome harassment and discrimination. Caregivers encounter unforeseen circumstances of their loved ones and transform their lives to provide quality care. I’ve been a caregiver for 15+ years, so I personally understand the emotional, physical, financial, and mental toll of caregiving as a LGBTQ+ person - which, at times, can be a very isolating journey.

I recognize the incredible amount of strength and dedication in my LGBTQ+ caregiver community. To honor and celebrate their resilient spirit and compassionate souls, I’ll be hosting a virtual Caregiver Dance Party with a Pride theme on Friday, June 18th from 6:30-8 p.m. PT, and I’m planning another dance party in November. I believe in the rejuvenating power and emotional value of community connection through music and dance. I also believe that hard-working caregivers should take a break and enjoy themselves. Join my celebration to show support and care for our caregivers so they can keep on caregiving!

Register for the Caregiver Dance Party on June 18th.
