Jennifer Richey
Jennifer has been a caregiver since the age of 14 when she volunteered with children with developmental and physical disabilities through her local community services. A year later, she was hired as a Recreation Specialist and worked for the City of Fullerton until she was 22. After graduating with her Bachelor’s degree from Chapman University, she began working at the Institute for Applied Behavior Analysis (IABA) as a direct support staff for adults with developmental disabilities. She has extensive experience with adults with developmental disabilities and knows how to navigate the Regional Center system in California and the services they provide. Jennifer went on to receive her Master’s degree in Organizational Management which led her to become one of the Service Directors at IABA. Personally, Jennifer knows the challenges and stressors of caregiving. Jennifer lived with her grandfather for 7 years at the end of his life and was one of his primary caregivers. In 2015, Jennifer’s father, after enduring years of dialysis due to kidney disease from Agent Orange Exposure in the Vietnam War, received a lifesaving kidney transplant. Sadly, he contracted an extremely rare fungal disease in his lungs and passed away only 5 months later. In both of these circumstances, Jennifer had primary responsibility for managing the care of her loved ones. With experience from an internship at a local hospice agency, she was able to coordinate hospice services for both her father and grandfather. After her father’s death, she was searching for meaning and a way to process her conflicting feelings. She found The Life Coach School podcast and it changed her life. In 2018, she was certified as a Life & Weight Loss coach through The Life Coach School. She also married her partner, Karin, after 20 years together. Jennifer and her wife are now raising their great-nephew who was born exposed to methamphetamines. They are in the process of family reunification but hope to have the opportunity to adopt him if possible. Jennifer is also working to move her mother into her home with her in order to better take care of her needs. Jennifer specializes in taking care of aging parents, adult children with disabilities, and navigating the Regional Center system in California. Through her life coaching certification and her Certified Caregiving Consultant training, Jennifer provides services through her business, Brave Caregiving, and teaches people that they can set healthy boundaries, manage challenging family dynamics, and handle the guilt and loneliness that comes with being a caregiver.
