Day 8: Arrival!

Day 8: Arrival!

But first -- one more rest stop on my way to Jane's:

Wekiwa Springs State Park is close to Jane and has 13 miles of trails for hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding. I had just a few miles to go after yesterday's ride, so I tooled around the park for another 7 miles before stopping by for our collective visit.

This looks like a nice place for a mid-ride snack:

The park is located at the headwaters of the Wekiva River. Wekiwa means "spring of water" and Wekiva means "flowing water" in the Creek language, but that wasn't always the name of the park. Wekiwa Springs was called Clay Springs until 1906. To draw tourists, the springs were advertised as medicinal waters that would cure an assortment of ailments.

The place looked like this in the early 1900s:

I took a slow ride on the park's boardwalk:

And there's a blue heron flying over the river:

Stay tuned for more info about when our collective virtual visit will be and keep moving! :D From here we'll pool our miles and move en masse. Keep reporting in on the VRide forum!

Got a place you want to send a postcard from? Message me here and let me know!

Today's ride: 12.5 miles in 60 minutes.

Hi--I love that you gave a shout-out to the turtle (Ridgley). :)\r\n\r\nOur stops have been soooo lovely and wonderful. Thank you, EJ, you're the best pacesetting scout a group of virtual riders could ever ask for.
