under-construction-150271_640We have quite a bit of activity around the house these days. I am hoping it will replace some of the TV time dedicated to Dr. Phil, since Elly seems to be fixated on watching him every afternoon! Our property is very deep and backs up to a parcel of land that was given to the city for a park. On the other side of that parcel of "park" is the freeway. We get a lot of trash and noise because of the freeway and the busy street that funnels the traffic to the freeway. We are the second house off the busy street.

During my spring break, a paving company left a flyer stating they would begin work on the park right away. We were all excited! This means that all the dirt around us will become a parking lot and park. A true fence will be built around the back lot which will be more secure than the barbed wire/horse fencing we now have. We are hoping the fence will help cut down on some of the noise too.

Yesterday, the big earth movers started working. For the first time in at least 20 years, the TV was NOT ON when I came home from work at lunch time. I found Elly, sitting in her chair, looking out the window at the equipment moving back and forth. Our patio is still winterized with plastic covered panels, so her view is pretty narrow through the window and then the plexiglass patio door. The water truck, earth mover and bulldozer type machines provided many hours of entertainment. Comments about why they were digging a trench along the fence and when will it be done were endless! When Elly did turn on the TV it was for a shorter amount of time and she found a different show to watch, Restaurant Nightmares!

We added another facet of entertainment as we have been plagued by tree squirrels over the last several years. This year, Elly said it was "time to do something about it." So, I called up the guys who eliminated our ground squirrels last year and so we now have six traps that I check several times a day. We have caught three squirrels, two within 24 hours of setting those traps! Elly always asks for an update when she sees me going out to the back yard.

You may wonder about the significance of the squirrels. We have a walnut tree in our backyard that has produced a nice crop of walnuts every year. Every year, for the past four years, we watch the squirrels chew, pick, or remove every single walnut from the tree. Elly loves walnuts and has had enough of her very good walnut crop taken away from her! The squirrels also get into my pots and eat my carrots, cucumbers and other vegetables since they are not just Walnut Stealers!

Well, pretty soon, I can stay home with Elly in the mornings and watch the park take shape without squirrel worries!
