Everyone Has A Story - You Just Need To Know What To Ask!

This week on my podcast "On The Frontlines of Caregiving," I had the honor and pleasure of interviewing Joan Berger Bachman, a NCC18 Presenter and coauthor with her mom of a terrific book titled: If Only You Would Ask: A Guide to Spending Quality Time with the Elderly.  As a teenager, Joan recalls her mother’s advice: “When you are in a social situation, always make an effort to ask each person three questions. This shows that you are interested in what they have to say.” In other words, give people the opportunity to talk about themselves! Generally, people are pleased to share, and you will have deflected the attention from yourself! So it comes as no real surprise that four decades later, she has coauthored a book filled with questions to promote quality conversations!

During her presentation at the NCC18, Joan will be going into more details about her book and discussing how to open up meaningful conversations with the older people in your life.

I tried it last night with my own 91 year old mom and learned all about her dating history!  I never would have thought to ask that, but it was one of the questions Joan and I discussed.  It led to a really fun and interesting conversation.
