Faster and More Secure

Faster and More Secure

Over a period of time, I've been working to speed up so it loads quickly when you visit. Just before Thanksgiving, I made the last change to improve your experience when you visit here. The site now loads as quickly as I can get it.

With the goal of having a fast site accomplished, I looked to ensure the site is as secure as possible against hackers and a Denial of Service attack (DOS). A DOS is a malicious attempt to make a website unavailable. You wouldn't think we would be the target of anything malicious but unfortunately hackers attack any website they can--especially one that appears vulnerable.

A few years ago, I added a security monitoring service called Sucuri. The service regularly checks the site to make sure it's "clean" and not infected with malicious code. A few weeks ago, I decided we need another layer of security so added Sucuri's firewall service. In essence, we're protected within Sucuri's safe environment.

Well, anytime I add new software, there's a chance there's a conflict. And, there was. The conflict happened once last week and early Sunday morning, causing the site to look like it was down. I decided yesterday morning to make a change to remove the conflict. The change appeared to be going smoothly until late yesterday afternoon. I made a small error which took on a life of its own. Late yesterday afternoon, I gave Sucuri the IP wrong address for the site (I was off by one number) which is why the site went down last night. Lots of requests for help later, the site came back up this morning at about 4:30. (Because of our 31-Day Random Acts of Kindness, I couched my pleas for help with as many "thank you's" and "I appreciate all your help" as I could.)

The good news is that we are faster and more secure. And, best news is that I don't have any other items on my Tech To Do list. (Thank goodness.) So, we are good going forward.

Thanks again so much for your patience!! I appreciate your kindness as I work through the glitches and snafus to improve your experience when you visit and participate on

Thank you @lilmagill and @worriedwife! I feel a bit like a bull in a china cabinet but I just wanted to make sure everyone knew there is a method to my madness. :)

You've done a great job! I enjoy how much faster the site is running now.
