Hover

Denise
helicopter_toyWhen a traffic accident happens, local news stations send out the helicopters to fly circles over the crash to capture the best video.

Caregiving can feel like that traffic accident. Sometimes, you feel like the helicopter flying circles around and around. You hover, fretting as you wring your hands.

Sometimes, others hover--those family members waiting to pounce to get theirs at the opportune time.

You hover out of worry while others hover out of greed.

Control the copters. When you hover too much, you create dependence, resentment and mis-trust. We all need room to breathe and the chance to do for ourselves. When others hover, they lose your trust because you can see their cravings as clearly as if they wear a sign that says, "I'm here for the money."

Trust that you'll know how and when to step in at the right time for the right reason. To keep others away you don't trust, be like a hawk, ready to pounce in order to protect.
