I'm New Here, Looking Forward to Connecting

I'm New Here, Looking Forward to Connecting

rings-249293_640My name is Robert and I live in Iowa with my 90-year-old husband. I'm 47 and have had to be his caregiver since his health has declined over the last two years. He has some dementia now as well as being on oxygen.

Our relationship has changed as you can imagine and it's almost hard for me to remember what it was like before. I don't have much help so it's a 24/7 job and some days I feel like it's taking a toll on me. I have recently met a woman from home health care that I can hire to sit with him if I need to get away which I have done on two occasions. Last Saturday I went to an event and one of the members from this website (@thpurplejacket) gave a presentation about being a caregiver for his partner. It was difficult to watch as his older partner eventually got cancer and passed away.

I'm open to any advice and would like to meet others that are dealing with being a caregiver to someone with dementia.

Hi Robert - I hope that you will find many good friendships and advice on this site :-) I would say that if you have someone who can take care of your partner from time to time - grab hold of that opportunity with both hands so that *you* can stay healthy and mentally capable to deal with whatever will be required of you in the future. Warmest wishes to you from Colette xoxo

Hello, Robert! Welcome!

Chris MacLellan

You've found a safe and soothing place Rob. Before you know it, you'll have an extended family of support, comfort, care and love!

Hi, Robert, and welcome! I'm sorry for what you're going through with your husband, and I know how upsetting it is when dementia starts to change the personality of the person you love. I hope you find the support you need here and the help you need in your offline life.

Welcome to the site, Robert. Glad to have you with us.
