Mom's Journey with Me, of Course!

teddy-242848_640Colostomy supplies. Whew.

First off nobody taught me how to change it, clean it, nothing. I got home with her injured from a fall at nursing home as we left and boom, I had my one arm full, the other injured badly. I had to go to therapy with it which again was a problem! You can't leave when you want! Anyhow we worked out a system mom goes to bed when I had to go to a therapy appointment. She learned the hard way after a fall best to listen to me!

So anyhow, we had Contour bags and wafer, good ones but two bags and one week til we got a nurse coming. Mom popped that bag, #1 first night home, my first lesson with a bad right dominant arm. Fun. Wow! But I did it and I did a darn good job if I do say so myself! And I learned to do it in two minutes flat over the months. I called visiting nurses and said, "We have a problem" and we did get a nurse out faster with bags. lol. Now we have Hollister wafers and bags, not as good as Contour but that's what medicare pays for.

Now over months and her diet issues, sometimes she still pops a bag. What a mess. We figured out Depends cause bladder infections, as she was hospitalized with urinary sepsis in August and had an infection March, April, May, June, July, August. Boom, Depends gone, more laundry for me, but infections gone too. Wearing those is not health and I'm lucky we are able to avoid it. Why did she wear them? Well, after you have a colostomy, your rectal stump leaks, and it goes all over anything, and you don't have control right away. We hope this will go away in the future but it may be lifelong. So, we tried female products in underwear. NOPE, infection. So now Mom wears cotton underwear, two at once overnight and in daytime she has learned to feel the mucous coming and get to the toliet. I'm glad that's getting a bit better.
