Respite, Long Overdue

Respite, Long Overdue

So last week, I took off on Tuesday morning to meet my friend in the wine country of North Carolina, the Yadkin Valley, and specifically, Elkin, N.C. This is my first alone respite in four years of caregiving. I have not had more than two nights apart from Mom for four years, so this was LONG overdue!

My friend, Ann, and I have known each other for about 35 years. We have this tradition of being totally goofy together. One of my favorite wedding pics is of Ann and I with our heads thrown back laughing. It just depicts our long-term friendship so well. We started taking "lip" pictures a very long time ago. It seems to be our "thang". I got there about 2:30 p.m. and we checked into the room and took our first pic.

The next day we took a four-hour wine tour, stopping at four wineries. We thought being progressively loopy looking was hysterical.

The next day we walked Mt. Airy and went to the Andy Griffith Museum. A walk down memory lane!

That evening we had a wonderful dinner at Shelton Vineyard's Harvest Grill. It was a perfect way to end two days of laughing and carrying on!

What I learned was that I NEED respite trips and will take a full week with my husband early next year.

Mom pouted a bit the day I left, and she bumped her arm on the dresser the first night I was gone, so husband had to do the first aid stint, but I stood firm and stayed in N.C. and had a wonderful time!

I drove home Friday, feeling better than I have in years. We are already planning our next excursion!

Good for you! Looks like you had a blast. Thanks for the reminder that we need to do this for ourselves. I've really lost sight of that.

SO glad you got away! We were just in North Carolina visiting my Husband's Aunt & Uncle they live in Flat Rock.We love going there!

Thanks, Sally, but this is a newfound skill. I took miserable care of myself for 3 out of the 4 years. I am grateful to everyone here for sharing their stories and helping me move in the right direction. I just want to share what is helping me with others and maybe it will help one person avoid the pitfalls of this journey.

Good for you. Thanks for sharing a trip full of joy and memories.
