To the Rescue

I was sitting on the porch this morning, enjoying the crisp mountain morning. I noticed a juvenile Robin caught in a netted blueberry bush. About the same time I noticed it so did the cat. Lucky for the bird, the cat is a well-fed house cat. The cat dashed over and found a way inside the net. The cat became distracted by another cat that had heard the commotion. While I was pondering if I should interfere, the Momma bird swooped down and sounded the alarm. Birds of all types, color and sizes, flew in to the rescue. I saw Robins, Wrens, Cardinals, Chickadees, an Oriole and a Mockingbird all come to see what they could do. Momma stayed as close as she dared. The cat never made another move. I released the bird and then the cat. Momma chirped a sigh of relief and they flew to safety.

I thought about how we all come to each other’s side for support, even though there is nothing we can physically do. We are there to listen, offer solutions, and be a friend. Most often, that means more than anything else.
